TIM NEWSTED & COACH/AUTHOR WARREN WILBERT bleed Tiger blood and they are
both going to write columns for WHEN BASEBALL WAS FUN a tiger quarterly.
Let’s look at Tim’s swing first. Don’t say anything bad about the Albion-
Hastings, Michigan area around TIM, that is if you value your life. He
taught grade school and coached Hasting’s middle school track team until
he hung it up and retired. Now he has the tough job of being the Master
Starter at the beautiful Arcadia Bluffs Golf Course. Kinda’ feel sorry
for poor Tim, dontcha’ ! I wonder if they actually pay him for starting
off all those hackers? Well, we all love him and look forward to reading
his take on the Tigers for the next year. Tim attends Spring Training
every Spring and that’s where he is now. He never mat a ball player that
he didn’t firsr hug and then have his picture taken with the unsuspecting
player. TIM NEWSTED enjoys life and good luck to him!
Coach WARREN WILBERT coached Varsity Baseball at the Springfield, Illinois,
LCMS Seminary in the 50′s & 60.s. I enrolled at the Sem on Dec. 1,1958, to
become a Lutheran Pastor and certainly not to play baseball. I’ll tell you
I didn ‘t attend too many classes before my class mates were telling me about
WARREN WILBERT and the Varsity Baseball Team. It didn’t take long before Coach
was knocking on my door. My All American/Professional baseball background
was established before P.J. my wife, and I had finished unpacking, I guess.
Coach & I got busy establishing my amateaur status (which wasn’t too easy)
and there I was playing inter collegiate baseball. I soon found out that
this guy knew and loved baseball
After close to a thousand years and serving five LCMS congregations I picked
up the phone a few months ago and almost dropped it, amlong other things.
On the line was my old Sem baseball coach, WARREN WILBERT, now living in
Fort Wayne, Indiana, where the Sem has moved. Among other things he has
become an author of baseball books. His latest “BASEBALL’S ICONIC 1-0 \
GAMES ” is about how the value of a player can be determined with a dif-
erent approach. Guess what ? Bingo, you’re right. COACH/AUTHOR WARREN
WILBERT now writes a WBWF Column called “TIGER’S TREASURE TROVES.”
GOOD LUCK COACH!
JUST ANOTHER REASON FOR YOU TO BE READING WBWF!! Spring issue out next week.
