Who said it? I’ve said it over and over, but the above statement is taken from this
morning’s FREE PRESS in M I T C H A L B O M ‘ S column. He goes on to say
that the reason it’s NOT LEVEL is because “THERE IS NO SALARY CAP!!
Finally a major sports columnist is jumping on our band wagon. But, I’m now con-
vinced that MLB will do ZILCH to correct this cancer. After fans stop going to the
ball parks in WAshington and KANSAS CITY and BALTIMORE and those small media
markets and after the BRONX ROBOTS win about three more world series’…then maybe
we’ll see some action. We just hope that it’s not too late.
I have finally realized why MLB teams still strive to win. They are trying to make the
playoff financial bonanza….NOT TO WIN THE SERIES! They’re satisfied with leaving
the big “FIVE” (YANKS, RED SOX, PHILLIES, ANGELS and METS who have already won
the last three W. S.’s) spend their billions on long term contracts. The latest nonsense
exhibition of this is the PLACIDO POLANCO $18M three year deal from the PHILS to have
him play 3rd base! They don’t care if he’s not even around three years from now. The
“BIG FIVE” can afford such financial foolish risks. They have money to burn. While the
small media clubs can only stand by and cry in their cups of wrath.
The Yankees have announced that they want to trim their payroll….HA HA HA HA!
On WED. they spent $5.5 million for Granderson, who’s also due $8.25M next year and
$10M in the following seasons. And then they doled out $11.75M to veteran lefty
Andy Pettitte on a one year basis. Let’s see now, if our calculator is correct they just
committed $35.5M to their bulging budget without even blinking.
A SALARY CAP IS THE ONLY ANSWER TO STOP THE “BIG FIVE”
from deciding MLB champions in their board or bored rooms and not on a “LEVEL PLAYING FIELD”! bobby hoeft
