CORRECT ME IF I’M WRONG BUT WEREN”T THE THE TIGERS PAYING
HIM $4.6 MIL??? You mean for a paltry $1.4 mil we lost the 4th
greatest second basemen in Tiger history (Gehringer, Whittaker, and
McAuliffe were ahead of him) ???
THEY DIDN’T EVEN OFFER HIM SALARY ARBITRATION. IF THEY HAD
AT LEAST THEY WOULD HAVE RECEIVED SOME HIGH DRAFT CHOICES
FROM THE PHILLIES WHO GET PLACIDO FOR 6MIL A YEAR!!
Let’s simplify this. The Tigers could have offered him 6mil a year or
18mil for 3 years and he would be a sold 2nd sacker for three more
years! He loves JIM LEYLAND and vice versa and would have signed.
A .300 clutch hitter, winner of two gold gloves and one season of
not committing one error!!! And he’s gone for just 1.4mil !!!
It reminds us of the 80’s when MORRIS, GIBSON AND PARRISH walked
away for nothing.
In a great story by TOM VERDUCCI in this weeks SPORTS ILLUSTRATED on
DEREK JETER we noted that one of the fab stories about how JETER
ended up a Yankee was completely missed. It’s that story about HAL
NEWHOUSER and DEREK who was in 1992 playing for the Kalamazoo
Maroons. We didn’t miss it though and the whole story is covered in
the Winter edition of the WBWF Quarterly page six.
