The answer depends a lot on the circumstances. That’s why we feel that
it came in the 7th game in the top of the 7th inning in the 1968 world
series between the Cards and the Tigers.
The nastiest & meanest pitcher to ever wear a Cardinal’s uniform, ROBERT
PACK GIBSON, was on the mound.
The score was 0-0 with two men on base.
JAMES THOMAS NORTHRUP, sorta nasty himself, was the hitter.
JIM whacked a GIBSON fast ball straight over CURT FLOOD’S head in center
field. When the dust cleared Northrup was standing on 3rd base and the
Tigers had a 2-0 lead which was all she wrote.
At exactly 3:00 PM the game was over with the Tigers winning 4-1!!
They had won the 1968 world series and the city of DETROIT went bonkers.
JIM NORTHRUP is a WBWF LIFETIME SUBSCRIBER so I called him and asked
him for an exclusive explanation on his famous AB against BOB GIBSON.
The following is his written reply.
FROM THE DESK OF JIM NORTHRUP (5-16-06)
“Bobby, in the rain delay at DETROIT I had hit a HR off of BOB GIBSON
over the CF 440′ marker and only about 20-30 feet from clearing the
park. Regarding the triple, I had watched GIBSON and realized that
he almost always threw his fast ball on his first pitch to get ahead
in the count and then go to his nasty curve or his ugly slider. So
when I went to the plate I said to myself be ready and hope that he
throws that fast ball on his first pitch. HE DID AND THE REST IS HISTORY.
THANK YOU JIM NORTHRUP FOR THIS FABULOUS EXCLUSIVE ON THE GREATEST
TRIPLE EVER HIT IN MLB HISTORY………bobby hoeft
