A TRUE BASEBALL STORY NEVER TOLD BEFORE…

By J.W. PORTER, a former DETROIT TIGER and renouned baseball humorist wrote the
following story about his FORT ORD baseball team while he served as their playing mgr.

“We were beating up on some team pretty bad when in the ninth inning they load
the bases. The batter lofts a long fly ball out to our center fielder, JIMMY LANDIS,
who is destined for White Sox fame, which he catches as he crashes into the center
field wall. As he braces himself with his right arm his hand breaks through the fence
and his thumb becomes stuck!

The right fielder, who has come over to help out pays no attention to the damned
baseball. So, while they’re dancing around matilda out there everyone in the world
crosses home plate. BOTTOM LINE: THREE RUNS SCORE ON A SAC FLY!

Those who witnessed this play did not know whether to laugh or cry. Because we
still handily won the game…tears of laughter ran down my chubby cheeks.”

  1. J.W.,
I didn’t know how to contact you. I hope this gets to you. I attended Bob Shaw’s funeral yesterday and just wanted to let you know what a great job you did. I played for Bob and Coached withn Bob and heard all of his stories but NEVER get tired of hearing them again. He is why I am coach today and have been for 30 years. Great Job!!!!!
