O.B.A. AND S.G.D.A.

The OBA (ON BASE AVERAGE) of Curtis Granderson as a lead off hitter is a
mystery. His OBA is a paltry .325 as compared to other AL lead off hiters
like Jeter, .406…Figgens, .395…Span, .393…Ellsbury, .355…Posednik, .353
…DeJesus, .347
It is our opinion that OBA is much more important than the BA. WHY? Because
it covers everything like BB, HBP, ERRORS, any way you reach base is included
in a hitter’s OBA. Therefore, as much as we all love Curtis he must be replaced
as our leadoff hitter in 2010. However, if he would just bunt more often he could
easily raise his OBA to over .400! He has speed getting a head start out of the
left handed hitter’s box. If he either drag or push bunted he would drive the
opposing teams wild. Surprisingly his 72 walks led the team, so he was OK in
that category. Otherwise he was far below the expectations of a MLB LEAD OFF
HITTER. Who knows? Maybe he will learn the art of bunting next Spring.

S.G.D.A. (STARTERS GOING DEEP AVERAGE). The Tiger’s big three horses, VER-
LANDER, JACKSON & PORCELLO led MLB in this extremely potent stat. Here’s how
they looked…VERLANDER 240 IP divided by 35 games = 6.857 SGDA! JACKSON 214IP
by 33 games = 6.48 SGDA ! and PORCELLO 1,704IP by 31 games = 5.49 SGDA. So,
these guys accumulated a whopping average of a 6.305 SGDA, going over SIX
INNINGS EVERY TIME LEYLAND HANDED THEM THE BALL! Verlander almost averaged
SEVEN INNINGS.
Now, seeing that pitching is the name of the game and going deep in a game for
a starting pitcher is all that a manager can ask for, is it any wonder that:
THE TIGER’S FUTURE LOOKS FANTASTIC!!
