When Baseball Was Fun

Companion web site for the book and Detroit Tigers Quarterly

WHAT THE HELL WENT WRONG??

Nothing?? After scribbling down all sorts of answers to the above question, I
read the following paragraph by Drew Sharp in this morning’s FREE PRESS:
“THIS WAS MORE LIKE A COLLAPSE, AN AVERAGE
TEAM PLAYING OVER IT’S MEDIOCRITY FOR SO
LONG THAT IT COULDN’T BEAR THE WEIGHT OF
ITS OWN LIMITATIONS IN THE FINAL TWO WEEKS.”

I think that Mr. Sharp has something…Remember last April when EVERYONE predicted
that the Tigers would finish last, except MITCH WILLIAMS of the MLB network , and of
course, WBWF. Well, much to everyone’s surprise, perhaps they were “an average team
playing over its own mediocrity.”

The more that we think about it the more we like that assessment. So now, WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE? Talk about fun…THE TIGERS WILL BE A FORCE FOR YEARS TO
COME! Any MLB team would thirst to have the following players all signed through
next year: RICK PRCELLO………….JEREMY BONDERMAN
MIGUEL CABRERA………BRANDON INGE
CURTIS GRANDERSON…MAGLIO ORDONEZ
CARLOS GUILLEN
Players they will keep through arbitration:
EDWIN JACKSON………ZACH MINOR
BOBBY SEAY……………JUSTIN VERLANDER
GERALD LAIRD………….RAMON SANTIAGO
* MARCUS THAMES…….*MATT TREANOR
* Players they will not bring back
Players under club control:
ARMANDA GALARAGA……FU-TE-NI
RYAN PERRY………………ALEX AVILA
RYAN RAYBURN…………..CLETE THOMAS
Free agents that we MUST BRING BACK:
PLACIDO POLANCO……..BRANDON LYON
Free agents that the Tigers will probably part with:
FERNANDO RODNEY…….JAROD WASHBURN
ADAM EVERETT………….AUBREY HUFF

For now we will limit ourselves to the following remarks
VERLANDER, PORCELLO, JACKSON, GALARAGA and BONDERMAN will be deadly as their
starting rotation;
Exspect outstanding years from AVILA, THOMAS, SANTIAGO (leave the man play!)
BONDERMAN, PERRY, RAYBURN and FU-TE NI.

And, remember, the 2010 DETROIT TIGERS WILL NOT BE “MEDIOCRITY” any longer!!
