We have written and called for a SPORTS WRITER WITH SOME BALLS!
WHY? Because at Comerica park a huge injustice is taking place aimed at two of the
greatest TIGERS EVER:
GEORGE KELL and
HARRY HEILMANN.
Both are HALL-OF-FAMERS who went in with their TIGER caps on and were proud to wear
the English “D”.
Both were popular and respected and greatly loved Tiger broadcasters for many years.
And, both are totally ignored out in “STATUE HAVEN”!! WBWF thinks that this kind of
embarrassment is totally unlike the TIGER TRADITION. We have for many years taken
our impassioned plea to the FREE PRESS AND THE NEWS SPORTS WRITERS without any
response what-so-ever. The TIGER’S management also turn a deaf ear.
For these two greats to be ignored in this fashion it simply borders on stupidity!
It’s up to us to do something…send letters and emails to these sports writers and
to Tiger management at: MIKE ILITCH or DAVE DOMBROWSKI

If we join together and make enough noise WE WILL BE HEARD!
How are the honorees selected? There is no doubt that both Kell and Heilmann are deserving candidates for this recognition. Pressure should be applied directly to those individuals or entity that make the selections.
There are so many things in life that are impossible to explain. Just look at the Detroit Tigers for example.
Why Alan Trammel and Jack Morris have not been selected to the Hall of Fame is beyond explaination. But, that is out of our local hands.
Something that is local, and should be rectified is the matter of Harry Heilmann and George Kell not being immortalized with statues at Comerica Park. Both were not only key players to their respective teams, but stanch backers to the Tigers and the city of Detroit.
For George Kell, just being our golden voice for so many broadcasts, should be reason enough. He played for a number teams , but Detroit was his second home to Swifton, AK.
I agree, let’s make it known, we want to see them up there with the other Tiger greats.
to chuck…comerica was built with the present statues in place, including the beloved Willie
Horton, the only one NOT IN THE H.O.F. There is no selection committee. If anything it’s
strictly in the hands of the Ilitch family. They should be the target for our protests.
to dick….we agree about Alan Trammell (a liftime WBWF subscriber) and Jack Morris. We have often compared TRAM with Ossie Smith, who was elected into the H.O.M. a few years
ago and the numbers are laughable. IF SMITH IS IN TRAMMELL SHOULD BE IN! The problem
for Trammell though is he just played the damn game without any sommer saults!
So to the both of you and to anyone else: OUR TARGET SHOULD BE MIKE ILITCH
With Heilmann winning the batting title, .394 in 1921, .403 in 1923, .393 in 1925, & .398 in 1927 and Kell winning the batting title .343 in 1949 beating out the greatest hitter in baseball, Ted Williams by a fraction of a percentage point, both of these individules should have a statute at the “Park”. This issue should be a given.
It appears as if they have opened up a Pandora’s Box. Enough said by a old time Tiger Fan.
Happy Trails,
JR
