When Baseball Was Fun

Companion web site for the book and Detroit Tigers Quarterly

ALL THE WAY BACK TO 1934!

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, but, that’s how far back MLB has to go to find a lineup all
hitting over .300! And, guess what lineup that was? OUR OWN TIGERS. and here
they are: cf….jo jo white………………….307
c….mickey cochrane…………..328
2b..charlie gehringer……………364
LF…goose goslin…………………306
ss…billy rogell……………………303
1b…hank greenberg…………….337
3b…marv owen………………….322
rf…gee walker…………………..301
p…schoolboy rowe…………….302
NOW YOU HAVE A TRIVIA QUESTION THAT NO ONE WILL KNOW AROUND THE WATER
COOLER OR OVER THE BACK YARD FENCE. The above averages were taken as of 9-9-34.
Of the above lineup only billy rogell finished below .300 (.296) by season’s end. Even
the “Schoolboy” finished at .303! THOSE WERE THE DAYS MY FRIEND.
