VIRGIL AND THE SQUIRRELS

When Virgil Trucks was just knee high to a grass hopper down in deep Alabama a big
league scout saw him throwing stones at squirrels. As he knocked one out after another
the scout was so impressed that he asked the young Virgil to take him to see his daddy.

The scout says to his daddy: “I saw your kid knocking squirrels out of trees one right
after the other and I think that I can make him into one of the greatest southpaws in the whole world.”

Virgil’s father then says: “But sir, he’s not a southpaw, he’s right handeed.”

So the Detroit scout answers: ” I just saw him throwing rocks with his left hand.”

Virgil’s dady then explained to the scout: “I know. You see that’s all the meat that we eat and if I let him throw right handed he mangles them up so bad that we can’t
eat them.

And the rock throwing kid went on to pitch two no hitters for the Tigers, both in the
same year, 1952!

The above true story was submitted to WBWF by the squirrel killer himself:

  1. I beleive it! Virgil should be in the “Hall of Fame”. If you compare his records to some that are in, you would see he deserves to be inducted. He’s one of the best “story teller” and nicest individual you would ever want to meet. On a personal note “The girls and I miss you Virgil, we hope to see you soon”.
