In a recent article in the Detroit News we read with interest a story about why the Tigers lost the pennant in 1950 because toward the end of the year Aaron Robinson, the Tiger’s catcher, failed to tag out a runner at the plate during the last series of the year against the Indians. We disagree.
The late and great George Kell writing in our summer edition of WHEN BASEBALL WAS FUN, a Tiger quarterly, in talking about that 1950 season said that the reason they lost was because their ace pitcher, VIRGIL TRUCKS, was injured and missed the entire year. Kell, along with the entire Tiger franchise, felt that Trucks would have won at least 14-16 games and that that would have been more than enough for them to win the AL
title going away…and we agree.
